testing coils off the bike

    I've got the coils off the bike and need to find out if they're good or not before I sell them. How can I do this?
    I can only get an ohm reading at the connectors. I don't really know where to go from there.

    test the 2 thin wires, should be 2.5 ohms.
    test the 2 HT leads, should be 11K ohms.

    That's 11K Ohms with the caps removed... just measuring between the two wires.

    I'm getting 3.43-3.5 ohms at the connectors and 13k-19k across the plug boots but across the plugs it pops up the number real quick and then displays 0.
    Does that sound right?

    Cross your leads and see what that reads, then subtract that from the 3.5 ish readings to get a more accurate primary side value. Probably OK.

    13K to 19K is quite a range. Check them without the the caps. They should be pretty close to 11K. Check the caps as well and at least make sure that the 1/4 caps match each other and that the 2/3 caps match each other. Probably all four should match, since the resistance value controls the burn time and there's no reason I know of to have different burn times on different cylinders.

    Yup. Those caps are screwed on the wires. They're also called spark plug boots, if you prefer.

    1. Pull back the rubber seal that covers the point where the wire enters the cap.
    2. Hold the wire firmly near the end of the cap and unscrew the cap from the wire (CCW).
    3. Do the same to the other wire's cap.
    4. Measure resistance through each of the caps (should match), and from one wire to the other wire (should be about 11K).
