So i pulled the motor before checking the compression.....anyone think it would be a bad idea to just do it on the shop floor with jumper cables...carbs and exhaust is off so wot is no problem.

I don't see what it would hurt. You don't want spark of fuel anyway. You may have to brace it somehow - not sure how much it would jump around.

not a bad idea at all. That's the only way you CAN test a pre-removed motor. Sometimes you gotta bring your own battery, cable and starter.

You left the oil in ?
Blow compressed air around the sparkplugs before pulling them, just like everybody else does, everytime (yeah right).

Carbs and exhaust off, plugs out, you're only compressing one cylinder. They don't jump around much at all, the motor is heavy enough to help you hold it still. Singles (especially BIG singles) can be a different story...

SWEET! Thanks for reaffirming that for me! Really don't want to take the head off and leave the jugs in just to find out the rings could use replacing soon!
