She lives!!! I reassembled her tonight after finally cleaning and rebuilding the carbs, replacing the battery, oil change, and spending about $50 to get a $12 oil filter bolt out, and installing an inline fuel filter. =D It was kinda touch and go there for a bit because the first 8 times I tried she wanted to get going but just wouldn't, still not sure why but she was acting like she wasn't getting spark. So I googled how to check for spark and then took out number 4, it was getting spark, then number 3, hit barely tapped the start button and VROOM!!! there she went, scared me so bad I shut her off immediately lol. I think when I took the plug wire off an reattached it I must have had a better connection or something, damn thing shocked the hell out of me, hahaha. She was revving at 4k to start with but I gave the idle screw a few turns and and she came right down to 1200 rpm. Just one question, I hear kind of a slapping noise, not a knock or a ping but more like a slap. Could that be a loose exhaust connection? I did take exhaust pipes 3 and 4 off to get to the oil filter bolt. But I wanted to thank you folks for all the help, I truly could not have done it without you. Cheers!

Congrats on getting her running. I remember looking at that bolt you had problems with on MySpace and thinking "ugh" when I saw it. I had a heck of a time getting mine off for the first time as well, but it didn't look nearly as bad as yours. Which reminds me I need to get an order in to Charcal for a new one by the time I need another change of oil.

If the slapping noise you are referring to is what I think it is, I believe that is normal considering what I've heard from YouTube vids of this bike running. Every vid I've seen has that similar slap sound. Mine has that as well.

If I go up to Rock on the Range again in Columbus next year, I'll have to check your bike it. Looks like it's really coming along. The rust that you have on your pipes will go away if you take a brass drill disc to it. For deeper rust, I used a dremmel and stone and sanding attachments and then finer sanding to blend. Mine looked similar to what you have going on and after sanding down and then coating with ceramic paint, I hated the look, so did some finer sanding and they're actually starting to really shine up.

Technically, the Bike's still young. At 79-Hundred Miles you wouldn't be ready to bring it it for the Warranty Inspection yet.

I doubt the Cam Chain could be slacked even a tiny bit under 10-Thousand Miles; but its easy to check.

Use a length of Wood Dowel and Probe for where you hear the noise.
Touch the engine with one end of the dowel
Put pressure on the opposite end by holding the dowel in your fist with your thumb pressing down on the end.

"Listen" to your thumb-nail while applying pressure to the dowel.
Touch your ear to your thumb-nail and listen the mechanical sounds.

You'll hear anything that isn't a "Normal" engine noise.
Move the Probe to where you think the sound is strongest.

If you think you hear abnormal sounds having probed the engine ... report the findings here and we'll deal with them.

The noise that I heard was just an exhaust leak. I forgot to tighten the exhaust pipes I loosened but didn't take off. *sigh* But the red warning light is flashing but I don't know what it means. Anybody able to tell me what it means? Also, after the bike runs for a bit she runs up to 2k rpm but I don't know why. Is that normal or do I need to look for a problem?

On my 650 the red light is the oil level light. Check you oil level. If it's flashing it could be getting clogged up. May need to treat the oil with seafoam and change. If I remember right your bike has sat for some time.

Your idle should be 1050 and set at operating temperature. You may need choke until it warms up to idle. If you have a cold idle of 1200 it is very possible to creep to 2000 when warm. If you get it set to 1050 when warm it should not creep up.

The red "WARNING" light means you don't have a battery probe hooked up, and your "computer" is annoyed at you.

The other red light means you need to add some oil.

My PO simply put some tape over it !!

The flashing red light likely means the bike's sitting there running while in Neutral and the side stand is down.

ya mine will go to 2000 after warm, but it dies back down, i always figured it was some computer thing where if u came to a stop you could just let off the clutch without worring about revving it, idk.

    Hi Rick,

Id like to take u up on your offer,

""If you think you hear abnormal sounds having probed the engine ... report the findings here and we'll deal with them ""

I have a loud howling kind of noise, in the lower front of the engine, under those round covers that have the yamaha wheel logo on them..
it seems to be loudest on the right side, whats in there behind those covers..? thanks in advance
    85 / 750 water cooled Maxim X

it does seem to become less loud as the bike reaches max warmup temp
and this isnt an exaust noise..its inside the engine..
