I just recently learned to ride and my first bike is an 82 xj750 Maxim. From the get go had to have the carbs cleaned etc and ended up having a short. Every Motorcycle mechanic was too busy to look at my bike. It kept blowing fuses to the point I have had no Brake lights, horn or lights on my Display. No Tach, No signals. I found xjbikes by looking for a solution. Found some good wiring diagrams and tackled the problem based on the diagrams. I was learning a lot about my bike. Removed the flasher unit and the bike lit up like a Christmas tree but still no signals. Replaced the flasher. no good. Yesterday I got on the forums and came across a thread that had similar issues as mine. I did a step by step diagnosis based on the thread and found the shorted corroded and shorted left rear signal bulb. went to the auto parts store got a socket and rebuilt mine and all works well now. This site has possibly saved me 300 bucks and I am grateful. I will need more help with this bike but I am glad I got to be a part of a special family of special bikes. I am loving it more every time I ride . I have replaced the Clutch and speedometer cables myself . so far so good. Thank you XJ BIKES!!!!!

my speedometer does not show the correct speed. Already changed the cable. Do I need a new speedometer or sensor (speedo nut)? How Can I tell?

Ha! Those pesky Godzillians are always messing with our brilliant system of measurement!!

Could be your speedo drive unit down low or the gauge itself could be mucked up. Could also be changes in your wheels, tires, etc. So drop some more info on us and we can dig down to the cause. How far off? Too high or too low? Is it erratic like jumping around or stable. Is it noisy while you accelerate? That should narrow the possible causes.

Just an FYI, when you have a technical issue you should start a thread in XJ Chat so others can easily find your thread and benefit from your solution.
