So i didnt really like where the highway pegs were on my xj 650, so i started looking for ways to make them lower and farther away so i could stretch my legs out more. Im sure someone has probably thought about this, but i figured with the scarcity of engine guards and factory highway pegs for this bike on ebay i thought i would share my idea.

I replaced the lowest, farthest front motor mount on each side with a 12in threaded rod, because the hardware store didnt have a bolt long enough, so i took the motor mount bolt and nut off, put the threaded rod through, slid the nut on the back side, and slid a nut all the way to the front, where the head of the other bolt was and tightened both nuts real tights.

So i rode it like that for a day, and then i noticed that my foot kept sliding off the end, because the lack of a lip at the end to sort of hold my foot on the end you know? I got four more nuts, four more lock washers, and two big washers, and slid the first nut on the outside of each rod, then put the first lock washer on, then the big washer, and then another lock washer, and finally the other nut, and tighted them both real tight again, and whala!(sp) i had some extremely comfortable highway pegs for two and a half dollars, i have only one picture, i will get some more if more are needed, its kindof self explanatory from the picture

Sorry if there is a thread like this already

how sturdy is that threaded rod? What size did you use? Is there a seperate piece for each side or just one long piece all the way through?

Nice. One addition you may consider is adding a piece of tubing over the all thread. Tightened up against the inner nut/frame it should make it stronger and hide the threads.

    That looks comfy, but . . .

    WARNING !!!

Tennsouthernbelle crashed her XJ650 because of non-folding highway pegs.
At the very least, add a few inches of coat hanger straight down so you can hear how close you get.
Not trying to be negative, just lettin' ya know.

Its pretty darn sturdy, it says the rod has a 1700lb break limit, you can feel it move a tiny bit when you rest your leg on it, but nothing major, i cant remember what size it was, but i just brought the old motor mount bolt to the hardware store, and yeah its a separate rod for each side

Thats a good idea about the tubing! i may try that

And yeah i was worried about how close they would get, but after riding for a while, i was trying to get low enough to get them to hit, but i couldnt, so you would have to get like sport bike low to get them to hit the ground

I do this regularly on mine. Bottoms of both foot pegs are scuffed, let alone something that sticks out that far. More than them hitting and catching I'd be horribly paranoid that they'd hit and bend and smash my foot...

pretty good idea.I'll have to look into something like that next summer.I would cover the threads with some kind of rod or slip on rubber sleeve for traction sake.
