    :?

I'm not your typical gear head. In fact, if you put a wrench in my hand odds are something will be broken shortly.

BUT, about 1 summer ago I picked up (from a dealer) a nice, low miles (5,000) 2 owner '81 XJ650H - with manuals and service logs.

Since then I've put on another 6K in "commuter riding" (20-100 mi/day in season)

But I have Questions... Questions than need answers appropriate to give to people who know the difference between a left handed spanner and a poly-phase inverted torque ratchet - or whatever - so here I am.

    Please be gentle. ;-)

Gentle is our middle name. . . as long as you listen to the sage advice of the Wizards here.
    Ask, listen, repeat as necessary.
Ask again if you are not sure.
There are a lot of people here who know some amazing stuff.

And buy your parts from Chacal - there is no valid reason to get your stuff anywhere else.

    Don't trust the dealer!
    So first do THIS.
Then before you roll the bike out of the garage do your rear brakes.. Chances are good that your front brakes are in need of attention also; and how old are your tires? Carbs? You may need to visit The Church.

What? You thought you weren't going to need to spend any more money on this than what you gave to the dealer?

Plan on at least $600 to makes sure your ride is safe and reliable.
It seems like a lot and it seems hard, but the people here will walk you through it. Start with the valve clearances, be patient, be meticulous, and ask questions!
