Is there an adjustment at the grip/switch assembly on an xj550 maxim? I have one on the cable and yes, my stubby cable is hooked up at the carbs. Adjusted fully at the cable, I can still turn my throttle grip a quarter inch or so before the slack is taken up. I believe the cable was for a Seca and not a maxim. Are these cables different? Thanks!

There is an adjustment point at the end of the curved metal tube coming off the throttle assembly, as well as the one in the middle of the cable somewhere, IIRC.

The 550 Seca and Maxim use the same throttle cable so that's not your issue; not to say you didn't get the wrong cable though.

I have just a hole in the bottom of the switch where the cable goes. The new cable I ordered looks just like the old one also. I bet I'm missing an adjustment nut or something.

Doesn't the "top" end of your cable include a "J" shaped metal tube with an adjuster where the cable itself "begins?"

Yes, but that is the only adjustment on the bike. It's not enough.

Update: I had replaced the cable with a new one for a seca (didn't pay enough attention to the ad) as I wanted a new one. The old one was ok, just, old. Anyway I compared the length again and it appears they are different, at least the J section appears to be a little longer on the oem one. It was all the length I needed.

Then you simply had the wrong cable. The part numbers for the 550 Seca and 550 Maxim throttle cables are the same. On the 550s, the Seca and Maxim use the same (stock) handlebar (I know, but believe it) and the same throttle cables...
