I don't like doing throttle chops but have a spot where the police and critters are scarce....so, out I went on the 700X. 4th gear, 4K rpm and whacked it WOT. Acceleration was ok just not what it should have been. It seemed the higher the rpm's got the more power it was making and when it hit around 8000 - 8500 it was really pulling hard.

I chopped it and hit the kill switch at about 9500 and coasted into the rest area. The plugs looked great, like new (altho they have only a couple hundred on them). Porcelain looked new, temp lines on the ground strap right where they should have been....great!

After buttoning her back up I pulled out on the highway and there was noticeable difference in the acceleration, it was smooth and strong. So I headed to I-90 for a 50 mile 75 - 85mph run.

Now it runs like a different bike, smooth, powerful starts, smooth shifts....kinda like the 700X I remember from the ol' days. She just needed a good internal cleaning!

so u just hit the killswitch at a desired rpm and coast to stop. check your plugs and this is a reading of the load on the plugs at that rpm?

Not sure if that's the reading just at the terminal rpm or across the whole the run....4K to 9500.

I should have mentioned that you squeeze the clutch BEFORE hitting the kill switch.

Yeah, she only got driven 8K miles from the late 80's until a few weeks ago when I bought it back. So 'cobwebs' is a good word to use.

Also, we use 4K in 4th gear on the V Max's because this is as close to a one to one ratio as you can get....there may be a better combo of gear/rpm to use on the XJ's, I really don't know.

Best results can be obtained by using new plugs.
