Can anyone tall me the correct path to take when passing the Throttle and clutch cables after replacing them?

That slurping sound you just heard was me saving them to my hard drive. 8) Last time I pulled my throttle cable (which was the first time, actually... but I digress) and put it back in, it worked... but every time I turned the forks hard left, the engine would race. These will help.

The only easy/idiot proof way I've found to change my cables is to attach a piece of cord to the end of my old cable as it is removed, so it lays where the cable ran prior to removal.

Then tie the cord to the new one to help snake it back into place, mirroring the old cables' path.

If you'd like those pics full-size, pm me, and I can e-mail them to you. The files are ~650KB.

They're heavily cropped scans of two pages from the Yamaha XJ 650 RJ manual.

Factory manuals from most bike manufacturers always have stuff like that pretty well civered. Their exploded views and systems diagrams save my bacon on a regular basis.

wow...so pic 03.jpg shows me two problems with my bike routing.

    1) The wiring harness on my XJ550 runs up the frame rail to the steering head, then makes a 90 down a 90 through a hole in the front plate of the frame then up...It was removed and replaced once and I suppose it was replace incorrectly...oh well I'll ignore that one as I don't have problems there.

    2) my clutch cable doesn't run down the frame by the coil with the choke cable, it runs down the front between the exhaust pipes around the frame and snakes it's way around the engine and to the clutch mechanism...perhaps this is why the casing melted on the cable .... very interesting indeed.

I had that problem and just fixed it actually. the routing of the cable was fine, and there was some nice slack in it (not tight). My problem was the throttle free-play was set incorrectly. I loosened the lock nut at the handle bars and screwed the adjuster in a bit to increase the free play and that fixed all my throttle issues.
