throttle shaft seals

    I'm about to rebuild a set of carbs from late "81" xj650 maxim. On this set I would like to
    replace the throttle shaft seals and maybe the fuel rail "O" rings. Is there an exploded view
    somewhere showing these components ? The hitachi #32 exploded view that the various parts
    houses use doesn't indicate the throttle shaft seals or the fuel rail "O" rings. Also, is there a
    tutorial that has been posted on this forum describing the replacement of these two components ?

    plus one on what K-moe said. There a few more rubber orings that should be replaced as well normally found in a carb rebuild kit. Beware of the ones for sale on ebay. I bought a kit from ebay and ended up getting the correct size orings forms chacal.

    make sure to take photos as you dissemble the carb noting the springs orientation.
    you will have to file down the screws from the back that hold the butterflys onto the shaft

    I THINK that only the Mikuni's need the butterfly screws filed on the back. My Hitachi's did not require any filing.

    Agreed, pictures, notes, drawings, whatever it takes for you to put things back from whence they came . . . unless someone else went through the carbs and put parts back in the wrong place! :eek:
    Do you have brass plugs covering your air/fuel mixture screws? This could indicate that the carbs have not been toyed with.

    +1 The Hitachi throttle plate screws tend to be peened less aggressively than the Mikuni's. I'd still recommend having a close look, and a screwdriver that is in excellent condition.

    I'll add two things:
    1. Make certain you mark the orientation of the throttle plates during dis-assembly.
    2. Get a piece of thick plate glass (like from a old furniture table) large enough to fit the rack. It'll align the face of all the carbs during re-assembly.

    Thick plexiglass works for aligning the carbs as well, and is less likely to get broken in the shop. I sometimes use the top of my tablesaw instead.
