I just replaced the throttle cable on my XJ750J and something isn't right. There is a 'bit' of play in the hand grip but most disconcerting is the fact that when I twist it all the way the throttle locks into place wide open and I have to release it by tapping on it with a screw driver to get it to snap back into place. (I'm guessing this would be a bad thing to have happen while out riding) I bought the bike with a broken throttle cable so I don't know if this was happening before,I'm pretty sure I have the cable routed correctly though it's hard to tell from the manual, I have both the XJ750J service manual and the Haynes manual but can't find anything about throttle cable adjustment in them.

Idk about your 750 but on my 650j the throttle cable adjustment is in the curve (looks like a long nut with a standard nut on one end) coming off the grip. Loosen the standard nut then turn the long adjuster to tighten or loosen the cable then tighten the standard nut to lock in the setting. Are you sure you have the correct cable(length)? Did you lube it? Are you sure it's installed correctly?

The pivoting arm on the throttle quadrant (at the carbs) has to positioned o be clear of the cylinder head fins when installing the cable, or otherwise it will bind like you describe......

You might have to slide the whole control out a bit or maybe the grip is rubbing the housing

I'd say to open up the throttle housing again, disconnect the cable from that end, and try pulling and releasing it to see whether it's the cable or carb linkage that's binding, or if it's something in the throttle itself.

Once that's identified, you should be able to better narrow down the problem. Common causes are:

    A worn or dirty throttle
The grip rubbing on the housing (as Polock pointed out)
Incorrect cable routing causing the cable to bind

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've taken it apart and put it back together again a couple more times and it still isn't right. Is the throttle linkage designed to lock open when pulled all the way up? I notice that I can get it to do that when I disconnect the cable and just pull up on the throttle linkage up with a screwdriver.

This sounds promising but I can't quite see it in my head, are there any diagrams out there that I could look at?

You have the tank off, right?

Manually operate the throttle linkage at the carbs and see what it's hanging up on. It's not designed to "lock open."

You said you make if release by "tapping on it with a screwdriver." Tapping on what?

I didn't think it was supposed to, it wouldn't make sense. The throttle linkage locks open while completely extended then the spring will snap it back into place when I tap on the top of it with a screwdriver. There seems to be a point where I can feel a brief resistance while twisting the grip that last quarter inch. I'm going to be gone for a few days but I'll try to get some pics later this week.

Go piece by piece take the cable off the throttle grip on your handlebars. Does the grip stick when you roll it stop to stop? If not grab the cable and pull it fully does it still stick? If so then disconnect it from the Caribs does the cablenmove freely stop to stop? If it does then pull on the throttlenlinkage on the Caribs with the cable still disconnected does it stick? If not then I would check your routing. Make sure your cable has easy sweeps through turns.
