I have a 1982 xj650j maxim and i always hear a ticking noise and the noise goes along with the rpm. i was wondering if this could be a valve or if something just needs adjusted.

Some potential causes of ticking noises, since I've had to hunt one down myself recently:

Valves: "valve clatter" at idle is normal for these bikes, I guess if it sounds particularly loud, you should check your valve adjustments. Edit: oops, ignore that last part. As others below have said, NOT hearing valve noise is a bad thing, so this is one ticking sound that you want to hear.

Exhaust leaks: check for loose nuts/studs, and/or replace exhaust gaskets.

Spark plug/wire arcing: don't know how easily this can be heard, but it's another thing to check for if you have old plug boots, for example.

Fuel valve/petcock: If the sound is louder from the left side of the bike, this may be it. Something may be wrong with the vacuum diaphragm, as it responds to the vacuum signal from the engine. This can cause it to go in and out, tapping against its seat in the petcock. Make sure there aren't any leaks in the vacuum line, or consider a petcock rebuild.

Cam chain: check your chain tension.

I remember it being said if your xj valves are NOT ticking a little you got PROBLEMS.

Beyond that the other checks sound good.

    Some Noises are GOOD Noises.

Valve Train "Ticking" is good noise.

If you can hear them ticking; you know they're closing.
