Going to buff and polish my aluminum engine covers and was curious if anyone has any tips on repainting the indented lettering? Tried masking taping it and exacto-knifing, but it wasn't cooperating too well.

Rick had a comment a long time ago about using vinyl tape, paper and masking tape, and going back over it with paint thinner, but it isn't really working out in my head.

Use a fine brush and do it the old way. Practice a bit first.

When I did mine, I used a small plastic syringe (10 ml ?) to suck up a little black paint and deliver it into the depressions of the letters and groove around the perimeter. No masking at all, quick and fairly precise. Have a rag handy to quickly wipe up the couple inevitable bits of slop. Same technique for the grab bar side rails and the rear brake plate. Worked out great. Make sure your syringe moves easily and smoothly first. Sudden jets of black paint will disappoint.
