I'm also interested. I'm a few steps from splitting the case to replace the chain guide. If I can, I'd like to solve this issue while I'm in there.

Mine pops out of second into neutral. If I'm on it at the time, it may even pop into first.

I've never had this problem myself, but my amazing Search-Fu(tm) reveals that it's usually one of these things --

Cannot engage gears: Bits of plastic that fall off the HyVo chain guide and get lodged in various parts of the transmission, e.g. the channels of the shift drum. Sometimes those bits can be fished out without splitting the cases -- see "emergency guidectomy" ..this is a temporary fix, as it's possible that the guide will shed more bits of plastic. best course of action is to replace the guide and get all the bits out.

Gears popping out: Shift forks can be worn or bent... they can be straightened out if bent, but... once you bend a piece of hardened steel, it will lose some of its strength. best thing to do is to replace the damaged shift fork(s).
Also, Gear dogs can get worn/rounded off. sometimes it's possible to re-surface them with a dremel, sometimes you just have to replace the gears. here's a very detailed walkthrough of a similar operation on an XS1100, just so you can get an idea of what's involved. It's by no means a walkthrough for the smaller XJs. XS11 tranny fix

I probably missed something, but it's a start...

Bottom line Schooter; motor has to come out, be flipped upside down and the cases split. Once apart, the extent of the damage and the parts needed can be determined. It could be the chain tensioner is disintegrating, it could also be that AND gearbox issues, bent fork(s) or worn dogs or both.

If you plan to pay someone to fix it, it's gonna be expensive.

it doesnt pop out of second.... it skips after 4500 rpm....
on alot fo the xj1100's peole say you can go through second gear if your gental o nthe powerband... well i never though about trying that.... cuz it locked up on me once... kinda, i couldnt shift... untill o rolled to s top, let the clutch out, and then it was fine..
but ya mine starts hurkin and jerkin after 4-4.K rpm's

fitz.. how much am i lookin at here... if i take the eninge out and have them put it back in... 500?
if itsmroe than that, ill live with it..

Stereo is right about the dogs wearing off and the gear where they ride round off also. There is a fix for the 1100's but I don't know if it applies to the 700's

The problem is that Second Gear is Not fully engaging due to the Shift Forks being Bent ... or, the Gear Drive Dogs are "Rounded-off" and the Gear which Your Second Gear is being powered from ... is slipping-off the Dogs (Shelfs that engage on the sides of the gears) and losing contact.

LtDave is right; get ahold of Carl and see what his price would be. Probably considerably cheaper if you yanked the motor and took it to him in the back of your pickup.

I've done the emergency guideectomy, the piece I pulled from a friends 750 was so big I had to cut it in two inside that little hole before it would fit out! Not pretty, but like the posts above say, that problem causes a 'no shift' situation, not a slip or a skip

Ace_Frehley, I appologize for the off-topic post. You are right, mine was a "stuck in first" situation.

    **UPDATE**

The email has not been sent. Apparently my ISP cannot handle a number that large.

Perhaps it'll go later after they get their servers upgraded.....
