Got my bike back together. Changed the chain and sprockets and the head cover gasket. I'm leaking oil out of my gear selector, but don't have the money to fix it and when I went to fill the oil I over did it. When on the side stand, the gauge reads full and I thought - well more oil than it needs isn't BAD for it. My brother told me that it would cause too much pressure and the oil light flickers when you turn the bike on. So IS it bad? Also, there are orange spots in my gas tank does that mean I need to have it relined like ya'll are always talking about? My choke doesn't stay all the way out like it used to, did I mess something up? And the bike doesn't heat up - it will stay on half-choke for five minutes and not warm up and I guess it's cause there's too much oil? Sorry for asking so many unimportant questions!

P.S. (because I'm thinking Fitz will ask) I repacked the bearing on the rear wheel when I changed the sprockets.

last time I over filled my oil it soaked my air filter!! you may want to drain some out and check that filter before it starts blowing into your carbs

It should be brought down to the proper level. Too much oil DOES alter the pressure and can cause leaks.

There should be NOTHING showing in the sight glass on the sidestand; on the CENTERSTAND (or with the bike vertical) it should be just above the top mark with just a "bubble" still showing at the top.

If you've got so much in there it shows full on the SIDESTAND yes, it's critically overfilled.

In any engine with a wet sump too much oil is just as bad as not enough. Too much can cause the oil to foam up in the crank case. Putting air bubbles in the oil and removing some of its load carrying capability. The pressure loss is due to the air bubbles being compressible. Very bad for bearings. It can also cause the engine to over heat for the same reason. Thats in addition to blowing oil out the breather into you air box and all over that expensive air filter. Put it on the center stand and drain some out as Fitz told you.

Ive always heard that too much oil was way worse than not enough.

It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and change your oil, so you know exactly how much oil the bike holds (According to your manual, or the internet), so there is never any doubt.

I drained it and put the two quarts I had in it. Also, found out why bike was running rich - oil soaked air filter!! I'm an idiot lol XD. Gonna get it running monday, sanding down the exhaust cause its straight up rust, then bbq paint. New air filter, more oil and she's on the road!

I don't think overfilling does permanent damage, unless you blow a gasket or seal.
I bought a car from a guy who was putting a quart a week in his car- - because it smoked. He was told it was oil smoke, so he wanted to be "safe" . He didn't know what a dipstick was !

It was about 8 inches over "full", and the crank was splashing the bottoms of the 4 passenger side pistons, fouling those plugs. Drained the oil,
    no harm, no foul.

that guy's penalty should be taking the bus for 6 months for not knowing what a dipstick is, not knowing where its located could have been tolerated. I think you got lucky and it was short term, short commutes, plus in this respect car motors are more forgiving

You can shoot the excess oil in a Permanent Filter out with Carb Cleaner.

Then, you can get it back to Clean, again, by using a Degreaser-type Dish Detergent.
One or two Wash -Rinses will do the trick.
