    Hey Boots... Sounds like yours are the threaded caps with 19mm allen key holes to remove as opposed to a circlip holding them in.

    If the allen holes are stripped you are going to have a bit of a mission on your hands to remove them and they will then need to be replaced.

    good luck

    If you are going to get into those forks ... Get a Manual!

    You just can't start taking the forks apart without knowing the lay of the land.
    Not only that, but if you make the wrong move you could get the bike in your lap.

    The forks are not complicated ... but, you should familiarize yourself with where you are going before starting the process!

    We'll answer the questions you have about doing the job once you have a handle on where it is you are heading.

    Here you go! Boots, if your model is a 700 non-X version (air-cooled engine), then those alalen-key cap bolts do not use an o-ring, but there is a gasket beneath each one:

    HCP8287 OEM inner fork tube top plastic CAP, fits either the left or right side tube of the following models: all XJ700 non-X models. Each:
    $ 6.00

    HCP8292 OEM inner fork tube CAP BOLT, fits either side. Used on all XJ700 non-X and XJ900RK Seca models. Each:
    $ 25.00

    HCP8286 OEM inner fork tube CAP BOLT LOWER GASKET, fits either side. Used on all XJ700 non-X and XJ900RK Seca models. Each:
    $ 3.00

    HCP8286SET2 OEM inner fork tube CAP BOLT LOWER GASKETS, fits either side. Set of two:
    $ 5.50

    And what Rick says is very true, you need a manual!:

    HCP1143 Factory Service Manual covers all XJ700 non-X models 1985-86.
    $ 59.00

    I think the Allen top is 17mm.

    If you use the search function (and Google) you´ll get lots of information about changing fork oil, fork removal, disassembly and changing fork seals (and evt. bushings) - I think there´s also a thread in the FAQ section.

    Front wheel has to be elevated securely and to get the top bolt out you have to loosen the upper pinch bolts (but not the lower ones).

    If an Allen top won´t get a grip, you may have to have it welded in (in which case it probably is best to remove the forks first :).

    You can always put them back in the tripple tree to get the lower pinch bolts to hold the inner tube while you turn your newly welded Allentopbolt with a big wrench.

    For parts diagrams and manuals I suggest you get the XJCD: http://members.tripod.com/dave_jack/id47.htm

    Good luck with the project

    Len, on my 700 (non-X) the top bolt had an o-ring, which is also shown in the Service manual - the parts diagram however refer to it as a gasket..

    S´pose you could use either one..

    Hmmm....Yamaha calls it a gasket. Might be an o-ring. Have to check inventory and curse the parts book proofreaders some more if it turns out to be an actual o-ring.........thanks Finn!
