what is the real top rpm on a 550 seca, my tach, now that it finally works, shows a 10000 rpm redline, but the engine seems happiest if I do not push it past 7500rpm, over 8000 it sounds more like it might blow up on me, it might be that I am not used to it, but I want to make sure before pushing it

If your valves are in spec and the bike is not running too lean you can REV IT all the way to redline, although it starts to flatten out a bit above 9 grand it will keep pulling, even in 6th. I love to ROMP IT to just past 9000 in third and forth (and fifth, getting on the freeway) the thing is a little rocket. It still has all sorts of go between 8000 and 9000 but you have to be sure you don't have a high rpm vacuum leak like throttle shaft seals or a sneaky intake boot crack. A few WOT plug chops are good insurance.

Once you're sure of its state of tune, you can run the bejabbers out of it.
