I can hear a clatter at Idle, coming from the transmission area, goes away when revving. Also noticed with the sprocket cover off there is a lot of rotational freeplay when in gear. Is my Tranny ready to go?

Does it get quieter when you pull the clutch in?

The clatter you're hearing is "normal" for the 550's. I thought mine was going out too, but after almost 8K miles, it sounds exactly the same.

From what I understand (BigFitz has a better explanation), the primary chain tensioner is oil-pressure operated. At low RPM's, it slaps around a bit due to low oil pressure.

Stereo, you prettty much summed it up. The 550s (not the bigger bikes) actually use the primary chain to drive the trans. It does have an oil-pressure operated tensioner; and the clutches are inherently noisy to begin with. All those factors contribute to quite a bit of clatter at idle.

It pretty much goes completely away as soon as you rev it up, right?

Both mine do it, the one with 23K a bit more than the one with 8K, but they both do it. Once I learned about the tensioner, I quit worrying about it.
