Hello, I am looking at purchasing a 1982 XJ750 Maxim. The current owner says the 1st gear went out and 2nd through 5th still work. He removed the oil pan and found what he said was a gear in pieces in the bottom of the pan. If I tackle this job, I would want to possibly replace all the gears and shift dogs so I wouldn't have to do it again later. Anyone know of a reliable source for these parts? I've seen some used transmissions on ebay, but who knows if those are any good? Quite a few of the new parts are no longer available from Yamaha. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

    how much are you paying?
does he still have the gear chunks? ask to see them.
you should be able to get a good used motor which would be the easiest way to go. then you could tear into the original motor to see what is needed.

chacal may have new parts or some good used parts.

what you are looking at is a 100$ parts bike if body work is mint maybe a little more.

Thanks for the advice! The guy is asking too much for the bike. I did see that bike in Alexandria and it is a possibility.

The chunk that jammed up is most likely the cam chain guide , last summer I tore down two of my e gines and did the starter clutch , I lucked out that both engines chain guide was good. If you want to try this is not real difficult, once engine is removed from the bike , you can tear down engine in about two hours , I used a wooden palate to put the engine on this keeps it from getting marred up . To replace the chain guide the cams and the head will need removed and new chain guide , Xj4ever has these , while engine is down restore the starter clutch , as far as parts seals chain guide, gaskets , starter clutch repair kit your going to be around 200$ in parts . Unless one of your shift forks are bent , your gearbox should be fine .

The bike owner didn’t keep the broken gear pieces. He claims it was a 2 1/2 inch diameter gear broken in 3 pieces. He did come down in price, so I may get the bike since I wanted a project bike.
