Yesterday on the way out of work, my bike, 1982 Seca 650RJ, wouldn't shift out of second gear. If I shift down, it goes into neutral, if I shift up, it sems to go into neutral, but no light on the dash.

I have read about the cam chain guide breaking down and jamming things up in the transmission. On the XJCD, there is an article about removing the pieces through an opening under the left hand side engine cover. Has anybody done this and was it successful?

    Thanks

    Ken

While your symptoms COULD be those of hunks of plastic in the shifter forks, I'm more inclined to think you've got a broken spring in the shifter "mousetrap" based on the described behavior.

Many folks have successfully plucked pieces of broken chain guide out as you mention and freed the shifter back up; but it's only a "stopgap" as the guide will continue to shed hunks once it begins to break up.

The cover you have to remove to get at the "hole" is also the cover under which your shift mechanism is located, so have a look.
