    hi -
my XJ 550 isn't working, i don't know whats wrong, and i need to get it to a garage. there's a place near by where i can rent a van. can i just transport in that? i don't have a motorcycle towing kit. i'm worried about keeping it secure in the van. i want to do this as easily and quickly as possible though.

what kind of van? if its an empty van with only a driver seat you might be able to pull that off. find yourself a ramp and some tiedowns. tiedowns can be had at autozone or target.

Van should work fine as long as you can get it in! A ramp is essential and a friend to help is recommended.

However! a AAA membership wouldn't be a bad idea either. I assume it's the same where you are, but here in Canada the CAA offers an upgraded plan for motorcyclists. Put the cost of the van toward it and you'll still have a few service calls left over.

when i brought my bike home, i put it in my 'truck bed trailer'.. i just used some tiedowns? only the ones with the racheting action.. the name slips my mind right now..

just make sure to loop it around the frame before securing it, that'll help prevent it from moving.

Side stand down, wheel turned to the left, and tied down, made it 20 miles @ 60mph... with lots of bumps and such.. hell, the wife was even driving. hehe. but my eyes were glued to my new prize. She kept telling me 'it's not gonna fall', but that's not what i was lookin :)

AAA would be about the same price as towing it yourself and you can still use AAA for the rest of the year.. even if a buddies car/bike breaks down
