are you two thinking about keeping the shaft drive ?
dont think it was designed to withstand that kind of stress and weight.
    i like the idea though...

I've been starting to think about this also.
I'm not very familiar with trikes (yet) but I was thinking along the lines of a small car differential and chopping the axle shorter to keep costs down.

My plan is probably a quad though...overgrown go-cart with serious attitude.

You'll need to do some math so the wheels you choose and the ratio of the differential give you the speed you want.

The guy in England used some odd, narrow axle flipped upsidown of course. An old rear drive Corolla if you can find one, or an RX7.
You need 4.129:1 or that ballpark for gears.
Then you have to make hydraulic brakes work on an XJ.

How about an old Ford Pinto differential or Chevy Chevette maybe?

I know a guy who has built a few trikes. He says he can make a trike out of any shaft drive motorcycle. He usually uses S-10 rear ends narrowed down. One side shorter than the other to offset for the shaft being off-center. I'm sure a Pinto or other small car or truck rear would work. My own personal idea for a trike is to use a front clip from a front wheel drive car and lock the wheels straight so they don't turn anymore. Then build the "bike" part onto the front of the engine and running gear.

I've seen a video of that on youtube before.... and I was thinking about it, too, because it could be done REALLY cheap.... infact, we have a buick with a 2.8 v6 sitting out back, with around 70,000 miles, runs great, but the rear axel pretty much came off the frame....

i think it would FLY too.
