I want to take the butterfly valves off to check the throttle shaft seals. I do not want to strip the screws cause that would be terrible. What is the best way to get them off. How gently do i have to be with them. is their any way to check to see if the seals are any good without removing them. I have the carbs out of the rack.

You can check the shaft seals by tipping the carbs on their sides and using an eyedropper to put some Marvel Mystery Oil or ATF on teh seal. If it runs pas the seal then they need to be replaced. If the puddle stays there after 5-10 minutes they you dont' need to mess with them.

If the rack was together and on the bike you could do the propane leak test to see if the seals are bad.
If they are original they are bad.
Carbs are free from the rack?
Go for it, you can do it.

A JIS screw driver is your friend during this task.
Get the correct size, square up to the screw, apply pressure into the screw as you twist.
Optional to apply Kroil and a little heat prior to doing anything . . . shouldn't be necessary.

My carbs (butterflies included) came apart relativly pain free - for that I thank the XJ gods.
If you do screw them up (pun intended) XJ4Ever has new ones, including socket head stainless steel! :)

    Oh, wait - don't you have Minkuni's?
    I don't know diddle about those . . . . .

Mikunis have the back of the screws peened - i.e. pounded flat so they don't screw out. You have to file down the back of the screw where it sticks through the shaft using a small flat file (points file). If you have a very steady hand you can use a dremel tool but there is a danger of damaging other fragile parts. Then be sure to use new screws and Loctite when you put them back together.

yeah thanks for the replys I will try to do that thing with ATF and see if that works. I am not sure if they are original or not. I have Hitachi carbs. Should I put the ATF in on the inside because that looks like the only way I can do it

The mikuni ones are Allen-wrench screws from Len Chacal.

Jayrodoh--- the hitachi rack is yours.... I imagine you recognized them:)
