I have problem with an 81 XJ650 turn signal switch. Long stoy how it happened but there are three wires inside that are disconected. (Solder came loose) I think I know where they go but would like to get it verified.

The wires were under the switch button and circut board and appear to go to the plastic body of the switch that sits in the bottom front of the housing under the manual canciling mechanism. There are three little brass rivets on it that are about 1/4" apart and the wires will just reach them.

The two longest wires are black, and brown & white the shortest is brown.

When I jump across the brown & white to black I get right turn. When I jump across the brown & white to brown I get left turn. And the way the switch works it makes sense to me that the black wire goes on the left post, brown & white in the middle, and brown on the left but I am not sure...

Also I would like to know if there is any way to test the flasher??

    I would appreciate any feedback.

Come on guys sombody out there must have had one of these apart before. I really don't want to solder these wire to the wrong place, and it's so tight and tiny in there I really don't want to do it two or three times.

    Please help.

i can't tell by looking at the wiring diagram and i don't have a 650 soooo.
it looks like you know what the wires do, so now just figure out what the switch does. you might have to take it apart to solder it, i know it's a pain but you'll get a better job

I know what you mean about the wireing diagram. So I guess I have no choice other than trial and errror. Guess what I'm doing today.

How about the flasher? Is there a way to check it???

The kids lost my book, so I can't look at the diagram to verify, but brown (chocolate, actually) should be left. When you slide the switch you are moving a small metal tab to complete the circuit. So your signal wires (chocolate/left, black/right) would be soldered onto the side that they signal. brown/white is the power wire, center post.

Again, hope this confirms your suspicions but I'm sorry I can't check the diagram to verify 100%

On the flasher relay: I haven't done this, so it's just a logical theory, and only for the original flasher unit. One post is for the self cancel, so shouldn't get an ohm reading on that post. The other two posts should give you an ohm reading. You'll have to play around with which two posts to put the probes to.

Thanks for the help guys. I didn't get to it today, and tomorrow I'm fishing, so it will be Wednesday at least before I can get back to you.

I will check to see if there is more info here before I get at it.

    Thanks again. :?
