Xj550 ,diaphragms in carbs worn and perforated now replaced with new , engine will turn over but won't fire up mechanic reckons that no fuel is getting to spark plugs . He's using a clean fuel container piped up to the carbs rather than the tank that's on the bike . Bike started first time and idled well before it went to garage it didn't run well after 4000 revs probably due to the poor diaphragms . Thanks for any ideas

Start by bringing it home from the mechanic's.
If all he did to the carbs was replace the diaphrams, he's not at all competent.

Have carbs been fully cleaned and been bench synched...good chance the fuel enrichment passages are plugged( CHOKE) The best and only way I would do it is full tear down and soaking in carb cleaner.

Carbs now being tore down and cleaned and will be synched. Just wanted to know why no fuel getting through to spark plugs when there was before. The mechanic came highly recommended and has a good reputation he just wanted to see what it ran like before doing a full strip down

Oem or jobber replacement ones have to be "indexed" correctly so that vacuum holes in the throttle slide are towards engine.

Simon - we aren't hating on your mechanic (well maybe a little) but the collective experience here is that most mechanics are:
    1) younger than the XJ brought to them
    2) making a living turning over jobs

So they do not have the experience/ knowledge of a synchronized 4 CV carb system AND their job is to get your bike in and out as quick as possible so they can move on to the next job. ,< This could be translated to mean that the mechanic says "That's close enough" and then hands you a bill.

Do the work yourself (you can with help from this corner of the WWW) and rest easy knowing that everything was done right.

    OK stum
Mechanic is 55 years old has synched and cleaned many carbs .He also explained the process of fitting new diaphragms to me holes toward the engine and marking the position he also said I could do this myself but I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to synching the carbs I have tried to follow instructions but I get a bit lost i need to be shown person to person
