Is there a specific type of line that needs to be used for the vacuum hose on the XJ650J petcock? It sounds like you need to use a hose made specifically for a vacuum, as it will resist collapsing, but I can't seem to find this part anywhere specifically. Can I just use a regular 1/4" fuel line?

No, you need vacuum line. Regular fuel line can and will collapse in on itself under vacuum once hot.

Any competent auto parts store should have an assortment of under-hood hoses, including real vacuum line.

If not, chacal (XJ4Ever) carries the real stuff and in the correct smaller OD tubing that matches what was originally on the bike. (Automotive vac line tends to be thicker.)

...or just go to the closest wrecking yard with a small pair of scissors, find a new or late maodel car and cut off a length, put it in your pocket and walk out. If anyone asks you anything just say you didn't see what you were looking for.
Or, be honest and do like fitz suggests.
