Checked them and measured with a micrometer today. I know it is not an XJ but it is apparently pretty similar.

    These are my results

    1994 Kawasaki KZ1000 Police

    Exhaust - 1 2 3 4
    Clearance: 0.11mm, 0.13mm, 0.12mm, 0.09mm
    Shim Size: 225, -, 230, 225
    Measured Shim: 2.25mm, 2.29mm, 2.30mm, 2.24-2.25mm

    Intake- 1 2 3 4
    Clearance: <0.04mm, <0.04mm, <0.04mm, 0.11mm
    Shim Size: -, -, 240, 220
    Measured Shim: 2.30mm, 2.35mm, 2.40mm, 2.20mm

    (-)= Illegible/no number

According to my Clymer manual, the clearances for intake and exhaust are 0.05-0.15mm

I was given a 220 shim, I was thinking I could put in intake one, swap intake one with 3 and swap intake 2 with exhaust 4 and swap that with another 220 to put me in spec. Sound about right?

Or I could leave exhaust 4 alone, keep an eye on it and just swap a 220 into intake 1, swap the 230 from 1 into 3 and get a 225 from somewhere to put in intake 2.

If 1 was 0.02, and dropping down two sizes to a 220 would give me .1 more clearance, giving me .12 clearance. Is my understanding of this correct?

(I posted here simply because the people here seem to be far more active and knowledgeable than those on the KZ forums :p)

Sounds like the math is correct; interesting clearance specs though.

Based on those specs, all the exhausts should be OK, and all but one intake (#4) are tight.

I would leave the exhausts alone and go down one size each on intakes 1-3.
