1982 XJ650J - is there a specific sequence for tightening the valve cover bolts? Couldn't find anything in the manual so I figured star pattern from inside-to-outside?

I'm like Homer Simpson, anxiously awaiting donuts...

I don’t think there is a specification. The donuts are the limiting factor as far as torque on the valve cover itself. I always just kind of do what you are talking about and torque it down like you normally would any similar thing - just to be safe.

Shoulder bolts with donuts should not need any sequence.
