Greetings everyone! I am now a fellow XJ owner (XJ750K) after a purchase I made this weekend. I feel that I got a great deal ($500), with only slight problems.

My first problem is that I need to replace the valve cover gasket. I have found OEM head gaskets for the 750 online for about $50-60. I have found the gasket for a 650 for $19.00. Can someone tell me if the gasket for the 650 can be used on a 750? Are there any cheaper gaskets out there?

My second problem (which has already been answered by using search) was that I need to replace the seals in the front fork.

I want to thank you guys for the forum and all of the great answers. I studied this forum before purchasing and am glad that I did.

Hey there, I changed the gasket on my 750 last year, I used the "Haynes Workshop Manual" to help guide me for the work. It is very usefull and a "must to have" manual for the bike you want to work. I also see that you want to do the fork seals on your bike, by having the "Haynes Manual" you also have pictures showing you every detail of the job you are about to do. It is well worth the investment for one of the manuals. You can also get the official Yamaha Service Manual for about $60 USD. Tha Haynes Maual is about half the price. If you search on the WEB, you will find the manuals available.

Any way, to get back to your Cylinder head cover gasket, It says in my manual that there is one model made for "All 650 models except XJ650 J and XJ650 - 11N (UK)" It also sais that there is one for "All 750 models, XJ650 J and XJ 650 - 11N (UK)"

I would not mess around too much about getting the best price on the parts, it is more important to get the right part and not have any troubles in the long run buy saving a few dallars, but then again that is my opinion. I also buy my parts from a local bike shop I can trust.

I hope this helps you out, take care and have a great day! 8)

TrebolSUD, welcome to the forum, glad to hear your a little more savy than myself online, you found the search right off the bat (took me 4 months). The gaskets are different between my XJ650H Maxim and XJ750RH Seca. I'm not familiar with your K model. Is it a Max or a Seca? You will also need to purchase the extra seal buttons on top of the cover if it is anything like my Seca. Sorry bud, sometimes that is the way the cookie crumbles. It could be that the buttons are included with the gasket you priced out at the higher rate. Check it out.

Thank you both for the timely responses. I really do appreciate them.

I understand that you shouldn't skimp on the material, but, a little savings here and there never hurt anyone. I was taught that if there are some things that you can go cheap on..............gaskets one of them (unless you need MIL-SPEC)

As for the Haynes Manual, I am very glad that you suggested it. I have had a Haynes Manual for all of my vehicles. The first purchase after my bike was the Haynes Manual for it. I actually found it for $20 online, new.

My Bike is a Maxim. From the forum I believe that the "K" just represents the year of production (being '83). 750cc

Thank you again for your help guys. This forum is a great thing for a guy like me to learn so that when my father and I tear the bike down, I will be able to say intelligent things, vs the normal dur dur statements when it comes to bikes.

You know, that is a good question whether or not the forks are bent. I haven't noticed it before, but the pic surely makes it seem that way. I will check it out tonight when I get home. I really hope it is just the picture........

    Steve,
You had me so worried about the front fork that I had to go home and check. It is definantly just the picture. Thank you for pointing it out though. I very well could have missed it when I purchased it. Luckily, the fork is fine.
