    hello all,
i just finished reassembling my carbs and have got my bike running better than it ever has! with only a few small catches.
1.) when i tried to sync the carbs with a four way manometer it makes it run worse and i can't seem to get the #1 carb to stop pulling all of the fluid(probably the butterfly staying open)
2.) after being warmed up there seems to oil burning on the either the #1 or 2 cylinder (as is comes out the left tailpipe).

i have my shiny new colortune all ready to try out, but i can't wrap my mind around new sync problems and how come i am burning oil. the bike is an 86 XJ700S with 17,000 miles on it parked for about ten years.
any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks
    James

Is one of the plugs wet? Black sooty deposits?
Did you replace the 10 year old plugs??
    Checked valve clearences?
Did you bench sync the carbs? This also helps to make sure everything is working as it should.
Are you using a YCIS tool?

Your smoke may be that rich cylinder with the butterfly open..

Do a Compression check on all cylinders. See if you have a low one on the left bank. If so, squirt some oil in the cylinder and re-check and see if it comes up, If not, Oil ring might not be seating properly, If it does, possibly bad valve guide seal.

I had a little smoke burn off the first time I popped mine off as well after 9 years... It was oil in the pipe, and after letting it heat up riding it a bit, burned it out.

The one pulling your fluid has the butterfly too far closed. The manometer rises toward the intake with the lower pressure. Butterfly closed - air can't get in - lower pressure.

Gee ... you'd think all the members of "Don't Need No YICS Tool" Nation would be jumpin'-in, here ... to help-out rpgoerlich.

Without the equalization passage blocked-off ... how do you pick which screw to adjust to bring one of the columns of mercury up or down a little bit.

    Eenee -- meanee -- mynee -- moe?
    Rock, paper, scissors?

    Well ...
    You can try ...
Adjusting all the Pilot Mixture Screws OUT to 3-Turns from Bottom.
    After you ...
Check the compression and adjust valves if necessary.
    Charge-up the battery.
Do my Free YICS TOOL Trick ...
Install a set of Brand New Champion RN9YC Plugs.
(Marvel Mystery Oil. I absolutely DO NOT recommend doing "The RickCoMatic Stuff" with anything other than Marvel Mystery Oil as the fluid used to saturate the 100% COTTON clothes line in there.)

Put the Pilot Screws at 3-OUT (or, like 2 & 93/100 -- more than 2-3/4. Anywhere between 2-3/4 -- and -- 3.00. Split the difference)
    Start-'er up.

Oh! Look ... the carbs are isolated now and its easy to pick which ones to adjust to make even.

    Make 'em even.

Please report back to us on how this tuning adventure work out for you.
We'll all start debating Evolution, Tires, and best colors to paint your bike while you get tuned-up!
