Wondering if anyone knows of an organized 'pool' of sorts for trading in valve shims that need to be changed after checking clearances. I searched through some threads looking for this, but closest I've come to is someone saying they thought it existed but didn't know where.

    Thanks!

Just replace them with new ones if you're planning to keep the bike a long time.

Chacal (XJ4Ever, see logo/link in banner at upper right) carries aftermrket shims for about half of what Yamaha gets.

Cheap insurance for a 28-YO motor.

I checked with supporting vendors and then found the valve tool on fleabay for 10 bucks including free shipping and I found the best deal to be Z1-Enterprises for the shims. The most expensive (3.0) was 5 dollars and the thinner ones were less........

I too have quite a collection of various diameter shims but as was mentioned earlier in this thread, buy new ones since there is some wear on the faces, not much but as cheap as shims are, it doesn't make a lot of sense to reuse them.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Once I get the cover pulled and a look at the clearances, I'll contact Chacal for any needed parts.

Mlew - I may give you a shout once I get rolling w/ this project since you're local. I live 15 minutes from Apex. Do you happen to have the YICS tool needed to do a sync after I get the valve clearances adjusted and compression checked? I was planning to go the oil-soaked T-shirt pieces route to plug the passage, but proper tooling is probably preferred if available. Thanks!

Looking forward to meeting you k-nut. I live between Apex and Cary(near intersection of Holly Springs RD and 1010 if you know where that is). Yes I do have a YICS tool, its a homemade one but it works. Next two weekends are booked, I have Cub Scouts comming over to build pinewood derby cars and need to clean the shop to prepare for them. If you know any scouts point them my way. I'll have about 30 boys and parrents in the shop making lots of sawdust.

MiCarl's video prety much summs it up. Boys building wood cars to coast down a track. Teaches builing skills and fair competition, just lots of fun. We give awards for fastest car , car design, paint jobs and just the plain unusual.

I still have my pinewood derby cars somewhere along with my trophies. Got a couple first place. :) BTW, I'm 43 now. I wish I had a son to do that with. I'm gonna be doing my valves this weekend. I hope I can get the shims local. I wanna get on the road.

oooohh...Pinewood Derby. I've raised two boys past Cub Scout age now, and we rocked the Pinewood Derby.

We had a little "rules question" the year we showed up with an 8-wheeled armored scout car (in proper OD with big white stars on the turret.)

Both my boys won firsts locally, on more than one occasion. But try as we might, the best we could ever manage was second place once we went to the "regional" events. Tons of fun.

We still have all of the cars and trophies too.

LOL, we also had a "rules" issue years ago before the wheel modifications were defined. My son had won the overall the first year out then the second year, he ground the contact patch of each wheel to a edge so that looking from the rear of the car, it looked like a diamond shape at each wheel with the tip providing the only contact. He also used a microfine graphite dust for lube(much smaller particles under the microscope) and the car ripped....they DQ'ed him for changing his wheels and my son was crying and heartbroken. He ran his backup car and placed 4th but that stuck with him a long time.

It was his first direct experience with those who unfairly made rules on the spot to limit the competition. He had built it completely on his own and he had been the one to research the graphite and found the scientific grade stuff that he convinced me to buy for him at 15 bucks for a teeny tiny amount<LOL>.

I had made a "snake" car cause it looked cool but the curves in the car set up an occosulation(sp?) that forced the car off the track on every run...it was fast but once it started going, it would go back and forth with more and more violence till it flipped....aw well, leason learned.

Post some pics of those old cars, I'd like to see them. I have a few survivors from my son, still have all the ones I made for me.
