Hey guys, ive been working on my checking my valves and this is what I found, all valves were too tight and go like this

    intake
    1 , 2 3 4
    has 275 275 285 285
    needs 265 265 275 275

    exhaust

    1 2 3 4
    has 275 280 275 275
    needs 265 275 270 265

so my question is can I avoid having to get all new shims and reuse the 275s where needed or should I get all new shims?

I've reused mine. swapped with others and then traded ones I have and don't need to new homes. I have had no problems with them. Member hogfiddles runs a shim pool. Send him a PM and he can get you the details. Or Chacal @ XJ4Ever has both yamaha and aftermarket shims in whatever sizes you might need.

okay I figured I could reuse them without too much trouble, on monday or whenever my battery comes in at the yamaha dealer ill ask about the shims,

now my next question is about the battery, I ordered the battery with the included sensor for the battery idiot light on the instument cluster cause it was $5 more than the one without,

the only extra wire i've found is white with a red stripe ( I think, it was dark) with some electrical tape on the end, by process of elimination that should be the wire I need to connect to the sensor on the battery correct?

If your Yamaha dealer is anything like the ones around here don't bother asking him about shims (or anything else for that matter). WAY TO $$$!!!

    Krafty,

I agree with Iwgo and Skillet...swap the ones you can then PM one of the members (like Hogfiddles) that run a shim bank or get in touch with Chacal (Len) @ XJ4ever. Local Shops may be able to order shims for these bikes, but it would be pricey. Hope this helps.

I see no issue reusing them, but I would mic check them to be sure they are still what they are labeled, otherwise the new ones I just bought we're $5 each, I only needed 2.

Reuse what you already have, or get new, or swap, they all work fine.

Dave (hogfiddles) runs a bitchin shim pool and will get you set up proper, and will even borrow you a space holder shim to hold spaces when you're swapping shims around.

But you can check with your local yamaha dealer as well if you just need a few, the one around here is real chill and the mechanic has no probs trading a shim for a shim.

Buy that mechanic a six of Leinenkugel (but don't get him fired.)

Back in the day, I had a great relationship with my local Yammery, I bought more than one bike from the same place.

Then the original owner died, and they got bought out by a "Powersports" franchise.

When they wanted $18 for an oil filter for my Seca, I left it on the counter and haven't been back.

im picking up my battery, brake parts and valve shims sometime when the snow quits and the highway opens up again.

this small ma/pop dealer was a sponsor of mine back in my motocross days so we have a very good relationship, all my parts for my race bikes were always at cost.

im sure ill get some markup now but im curious to see the price.
