    Hello All,
    My name is Matthew and i just purchased my first xj650. Ive been reading all the threads here as i have to do stuff to it like rebuild the carbs and stuff. Today i checked all the valve shims clearnce and wrote down the numbers. Im kinda confused on how to read all of this so im wondering if you guys could help.
    # 1 cylinder
    Intake .04. Shim. Y275. So i need a 270 shim right?
    Exhaust. .08. Shim. Y280. So i need a 270 shim?

    #2 cylinder
    Intake. .10mm. Shim y275. So i need a 270?
    Exhaust. .13mm. Shim y280. So i need a 275 shim?

    #3 cylinder
    Intake. .05mm. Shim y285. So i need a 275 shim?
    Exhaust .13mm. Shim y270. So i need a 265 shim?

    #4 cylinder
    Intake. .08mm. Shim y285. So i need a 280 shim?
    Exhaust. .05mm. Shim y275. So i need a 260 shim?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated

    welcome to the forum. just at a glance, it looks right to me, although you may want to leave #2 intake alone and check and adjust in 3,000 miles.

    #4 cylinder
    Intake. .08mm. Shim y285. So i need a 280
    Exhaust. .05mm. Shim y275. So i need a 260

    Correct except for intake #3----

    Intake:
    1-265
    2-270
    3-275
    4-280

    Exhaust
    1-270
    2-275
    3-265
    4-260

    You need only 4 replacement shims: the rest can move around.

    Here's how:

    E4 - gets a new 260, the 275 goes to E2
    E3 - gets a new 265, the 270 goes to E1
    (E2 gets shim from E4)
    (E1 gets shim from E3, the 280 goes to I4)

    I1 - gets a 265, the 275 goes to I3
    I2 - gets a new 270
    (I3 gets shim from I1)
    (I4 - gets the 280 from E1)

    In short, you need to get

    260 - 1
    265 - 2
    270 - 1

    If you need shims, you can either buy new, or borrow from the shim pool. SC me for shim pool details)
