Actually, I'm not sure if those specs for the UK and XJ650J models are correct.....that comes from the Haynes manual, and I believe they are wrong. The same mis-info is published in the factory Yamaha service manual supplement for the XJ650RJ Seca models, and it too is wrong (and the UK XJ650 4K0 models are basically what the US market calls a "seca" model, and I suspect that Yamaha merely "lifted" that info from the UK model service manual to create their 650RJ "supplemental service manual, since again----the North American 650RJ Seca models are, for all practical purposes, the UK/European XJ650 4K0 models.........).

The service data/tune-up specs on the XJ650J and XJ650K models (1982 and 1983) and on the XJ650RJ Seca models.....on the little plasticized decal inside the side covers.......lists the intake being .011 - .015mm for those models, as well as for all other XJ550, XJ650, XJ700 non-X, XJ750 non-X, and XJ900RK models:

    Inlet: 0.11-0.15mm = (0.004-0.006")
    Exhaust: 0.16-0.20mm = (0.006-0.008")

The XJ700-X and XJ750-X models have different clearances, as do the XJ1100 models.

NOW, it could be that the service decals are wrong, and the Haynes/Yamaha 650 Seca shop manuals are correct.

However, I have no conception of why a 1980-81 XJ650 Maxim (also using the same 650cc non-YICS engine) would have a different specified intake valve clearance than the 1982 XJ650RJ Seca (or the UK models). Nor why a 1982 XJ650J models would.

Just an extra 2-cents to grasp, grovel about, and confuse you with!

P.S. would be might interesting to hear from any UK/Euro XJ650 "4K0" model owners, and let us know what it says on their side cover tune-up specs decal in reagrds to the valve clearances.........

    Now this concerns me.
When I did the valve adjustment I used the Yammi shop manual clearence numbers.
You say they are wrong or different.
Damn I guess I will have one more thing to look at when the deep freeze is over.

I'd have to go with chacal on this one; the same motor in a different bike has the same specs as all the other bikes in the series; looks like a perpetuated typo to me. Especially if the little decal inside the sidecover substantiates the theory.

Ok, this is very interesting since I am in the process of doing a valve adjustment right now on my XJ650J.

Here are two more bits of evidence that the Haynes manual is WRONG for the 650J:

    1. Checking the Yamaha Parts Catalog at the Yamaha site - <http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx> and looking up a 1982 XJ650J, then the "Service Data" page, reveals that the "Valve Clearance (cold) Intake/Exhaust = 0.11mm ~ 0.15mm / 0.16mm ~ 0.20mm".

    2. Also, the sticker inside my side cover says the same thing.

So, that's what I'm going with!

The only good thing is that if they are wrong, they are wrong on the slack side, so nobody should have done any harm over the las few decades.

Ok, here's another bit of evidence: In the Haynes manual itself, on pg 41 (1993 edition) is the list of engine specifications at the beginning of Chapter 1.

Under "Valve Clearances (engine cold)" it lists the XJ650RJ and XJ650 (UK) as having an Inlet clearance of 0.16-0.20mm, but NOT the XJ650J! It says "All other models = 0.11-0.15mm".

This is NOT what it says on pg 31, under "Routine Maintenance", where it lists the XJ650(UK) and XJ650J as having the 0.16-0.20 intake spec.

So, the Haynes manual even contradicts ITSELF!!!!!

    Jamien,
The intake spec for all XJ650's is 0.11-0.15mm.
The factory manual is wrong as well as Haynes.
I called Yamaha America and confirmed this.
