valve timing /cam chain,questions

    hi all.
    I have a few questions to ask, if you will bear with me,
    I've rebuilt my engine top end ,barrels and head new cam-chain etc.
    the valve timing seems slightly out on the intake cam,as the camshaft dot is about 2mm out, its not enough to move to another tooth on the sprocket, but tensioners are fitted, all other marks are lined up.

    I'm a little scared to rotate the engine unless I get assurances it may be ok.
    another thing is I broke my new chain breaker/riveter whilst riveting the new chain link, just how much do the ends of the rivet link have to be burred over

    is this enough?

    and w.t.f. happened to my new chain breaker? did I turn it too much
    its the first time I've used one?

    Stu; the chain is NOT riveted enough at all. I think you tried to use the "breaking" fitting to mash the pins on the new link; usually the "smashing" fitting is much shorter.

    Did you have the sprockets loose from the camshafts? Don't do it in response to my question, just asking as the answer might help.

    Your "dots" aren't significantly off; I would recommend spinning the engine over a few times, re-tensioning the cam chain, and re-checking. But NOT UNTIL you get that chain riveted properly. Go back and re-read your instruction sheet. I'm not quite sure what came with the tool you got, you might be lucky and not broken the part(s) you need to use.

    thanks for the quick reply fitz.
    yes I did remove the sprockets, but they were both marked up ,and replaced as they came off,
    I think I may have an answer, there may be enough play in the sprocket bolts to move slightly on each one.
    I think youre right on the chain breaker, yes I used the same push rod to rivet as I did to break it "dogh"
    the instructions that came with it are not much use ,as the parts in the box are not labled up.
    i'll get a better picture tomorrow of the pieces

    Did you use a crescent wrench or open end box wrench to align the dots with the mark on the caps?

    2 mm off on the marks is fairly normal.

    thanks everyone, everythings sorted now. finally sorted out how the tool is supposed to work, I thought you used the correct size push pin for the chain for both breaking and riveting, wrong ,
    as fitz said theres a much larger push pin for riveting, "dogh"

    so mashed the ends of the link over a lot better now

    rotated engine a few times ,dots are still a mm out on each, but it turns fine
    have to retension chain now
