I went to a friends today and a drunk neighbor was over and says you need to vaseline up them saddlebags. I have never heard of putting petroleum product on leather. I have some mink oil stuff they gave me when I bought the bags to waterprrof and condition them. So is drunk neighbor right is vaseline ok for leather or not??

From my experiance anything petroleum based will "discolor" your leather. Turn it a greyish for a little while. Not sexy

Not saying it wont "work". But definatly discolor your seat. I use Armor All Leather Protector/Sealer. Works good, easy to use, smells good, and six buck a bottle for like a hundred uses. Couldnt pass it up on my beat up seats

I used Mr. Leather cleaner and conditioner on an old faded leather jacket about 3 months ago.
    It looks like new again.

Do NOT get it on a hardwood floor unless you want your wife to slip and fall numerous times.
Nothing I do will take the stuff off!

Just don't use Armorall on a vinyl seat. It makes it very slippery and causes butt pucker.

No, Vaseline is NOT good for leather. It will end up drying out and degrading the leather. Not to mention adding a very unpleasant, greasy layer to the surface...

Here's what I use on leather:
Cleaning and moisturizing - Barbasol shaving cream - any unscented, non-colored shaving cream foam (not gel) works.
    Waterproofing - Mink Oil

The shaving cream has moisturizers and mild but effective cleaners in it. Worked wonders on the shoes for my Dress uniforms in the service - stripped all the old wax and polish off and left the leather clean, soft and supple. It's also worked extremely well on all my leather jackets and boots too - cleans them right up with very little effort.

Mink Oil is definitely the way to go for waterproofing as well. Keeps the leather waterproofed and adds back some of the natural oils into the leather to help keep it in good condition.

I've used mothers leather cleaner to clean off the previous junk (armor all) and to condition. It worked good for vinyl too (my shop towel turned black from all of the crap that it cleaned off my seat).

That shaving cream reference above was interesting ;-) will have to try that, would be a heck of a lot cheaper, lol

Saddle soap. the bags are made of saddle skirt leather. I clean my saddle with saddle soap still looks good and its 30 years old. helps in waterproofing also.

Mink oil after a wash with saddle soap is a good recommendation for leather. I'd even offer that you would be better off with Johnson's paste wax, I'd steer clear of vasoline, it isn't going to do any good.

Lexol is supposed to be good. I've used that on saddle bags, not sure about seats though. They have a cleaner and a conditioner.

My X-boyfriend was a drunk, now he's sober. But he's a mechanical genius, even when drunk.

    So-nothing is static.
