very dim headlight.

    My XJ has a new battery. I have cleaned and greased all connections and checked the ground but the low beam head light is VERY dim. The guy at the Yamaha dealership said I either need find the ground problem (theres not one) or buy a new light to get my inspection sticker. This brings me to my question. Where can I get a new headlight. The oem at the dealership was 50$ and I want a higher wattage anyways. Can I just go to the auto parts store and pick a new one up? If so, What is the part number and how much do they cost?

    You might slap a volt meter on at the battery and make sure you're getting 14 volts at 2K rpm. Battery doesn't have enough capacity to make the light bright without help from the alternator.

    As far as bulb - We need to know which bike you have.

    I just put a 7" round sealed halogen on mine. $8 at Wal*Mart.

    oops sorry about that. It is the 81 XJ 650. It does get 14V at 2k so the brushes are fine. Are all round headlights pretty much the same>? I would assume not.

    micarl did it make your low beam any brighter?

    Yes. Considerably brighter - and white instead of yellow (even at idle).

    I forget the number. You can just go up to Wal*Mart and get the 7" round halogen headlight. The one that says it's for cars with 2 headlights.

    the battery voltage may be fine but it's the voltage at the light that counts
    measure at the headlight plug with the light on

    I am majoring in electrical engineering and I don't have a volt meter. sad isn't it. :( I'll just buy the light if it works it works. if not. oh well. Its only 8$

    engineer yourself up a headlight relay to go with the sealed beam and you'll be set

    my head light went out completely and i baught the round one at walmart it fit the connector but i had to remove the mounting ring and bend the tabs back but it fits awesome and is brighter on low than it was on high before and it also shins to the sides too. 8$ was worth the money
