    Hello,

I am in the process of getting a title for a 1982 650 Maxim that I bought off of a guy...the VIN label was worn off by sun/rain and such.

I am wondering ifthe check digits for the VIN are the same across a model year...my Engine code is 5N8-008681...so I figure my whole VIN is:

    JYA5N8005CA008681

I am basing that assumption on the idea that the check digits are the same across a model year?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Jon

I just recently noted that the neck of my frame is stamped:

    15R-009518...no idea what that means...

as far as i know the # stamped in the steel on the steering neck is the only # that counts

Yep, I just figured it out...after doing some searching and looking, I have determined that the bike I have has a 750 frame with a 650 motor..obviously somebody swapped the motor way early on before I got it...this is ironic because I put a 750 top end on the bike to make it a bigger bike...in actuality the thing had been downgraded so my "upgrade" doesn't even get it back to normal...son of a b*&*(^

In any case, I am pretty sure this puts the kaibosh on any chance of me getting it titled but we'll see...I am just going to give them the correct vin number for it that I have just deduced and hope they don't have too shrap a set of eyes...

Damn the PO's to heck and gone!!!!

I just had to go through hell here in jersey because of how short the VIN# is. I had to do a shading of it with a paper and pencil and then take a real good color digital pic of it. The number on your engine block is the same and yes that short number is your VIN number. I hope this was helpful. Enjoy that 650 Maxim, I've been enjoying mine for 3 years so far. Keep the shiny side up!

Check digits are not the same across model years. They are calculated from the VIN. The check digit you have in the VIN you posted is incorrect.

Here is the corrected VIN: JYA5N8000CA008681

Check THIS and make sure it is the correct model/year.

They will not give you a title if the check digit is incorrect. I tried that once LOL.

After doing the calculation several times...I came up with this:

JYA5N800XCA008681...that is the correct VIN for the bike that my motor came from..however...

The frame on my bike is for a 1982 750 Maxim...I have the correct VIN for the frame now that I did the calculation so now I am going to see if I can make it fly as the paper tag on the right side of the neck has been rubbed off, now I think it was because the person who put the 650 motor in didn't want to hassle with DMV..not bright but too late for that now.

We'll see how it turns out...right now I am applying for an abandoned title as the bike was just sitting in a guys yard...hopefully it'll work otherwise...?

    Thanks,

    Jon
