so it seems like the majority if not all of us are just trying to figure out a solution to the enormous seats on maxims...so here goes nothing...

anyone out there have a seat for a 1980 xj650 maxim? either for sale or to donate so I can try to modify the son of a b**ch for a sleeker look (possibly a cafe look, wishful thinking huh)? I may also be willing to trade my seat (which has a new tan colored seat cover) for a black one....I'll have pics soon if anyone is interested....

    any other suggestions are welcomed....

Having the same problem.I removed the seat cover.Cut down the foam. And recovered with black vinyl.Still got a little left to do,but a lot better than the 8" thick seat.Used a Harley night train seat as a template.I'm 6',used to ride sitting in the pass part of the seat. Now I can sit comfortable. But I found out a mid 80's sportster seat is a good replacement.

really? a sportster seat? any particular models? I saw some on steelthundercc.com that might look like they'd fit...particularly the "showdown ultima" saddles....got any pics of your seat?

Mines not finished yet. After cutting down the foam it needs to be rode to make sure its comfortable.I call it a seat tweak!A little here,a lot there. Then once you get the shape right.Add a 1" covering of gel foam, memory foam, etc. And cover with vinyl. If you want to get fancy you can get a raised effect by placing
the vinyl(back side up),then a thin layer of foam,And a backing layer(fabric),using push pins set it in place. And sew whatever design, letters, etc. Then just trim off the excess foam, and backing .And you get a raised effect. Once I'm finished I'll post pics.
