That would be a good trick. Except there is no such thing.

IT DOESN'T EXIST. You're probably looking at the mounting ear on the RH side and thinking you're missing that handle. You're not. There never was one.

What IS the mount for? In the USA, it's for the factory-official accessory luggage rack; and also used to mount most aftermarket luggage racks too.

In Europe, some of the XJ400s and XJ500s (four cylinder bikes that look just like 550 Secas) as well as the 550s, had a wrap-around passenger grab rail that used the mounts on both sides.

I have only ever seen these in advertising brochures from Europe and on eBay Germany. They were not fitted to the USA-market bikes nor were they available here as an accessory.

I'd love to find one myself. See Dutch brochure below:

    LOL, Thanks Fitz!
You always have the answer. I feel pretty stupid! It looks like one belongs there. Why would they only put a handle on one side it doesn't seem practical and it is aesthetically asymmetrical.

I agree wholeheartedly. It NEEDS one; for symmetry if nothing else.

Don't feel stupid; I looked for one for a couple of years before research proved I was chasing my tail.

One of the forum members gave me a link to a listing on eBay.DE for a grab rail a year or two ago; but the "language barrier" and the German seller's reluctance to ship off the Continent torpedoed it. I still want one for my '81.

The other solution (and you have to find your own)
