Washer-on-a-threaded-rod sound. That's the only way i can think of to describe the sound i hear when i get my XJ up to around 4500rpm. It doesn't happen right away, but after about 3-4 miles it starts up. It only happens at that point on the tach, and it doesn't matter what gear I'm in, or if I'm in gear at all.

    Any ideas?

    Cam chain.

They like to make that sound. Check to make sure the adjuster is working properly. If so, then maybe your chain needs to be replaced with a new one. They tend to get worn out, and the adjuster no longer is as effective as before.

And i suppose there is no such thing as Cam Chain Adjuster Fluid that I could just add to the oil and fix this, huh? Well, I guess I'll finally have to open her up. I gotta say, I'm more than a little nervous about this...I'll be posting as I get into it. Thanks!

Dunno yet... I suppose I'd better check before doing some damage, huh? I'm just getting friendly with my shop manual now.

Do a search on this site for camchain tensioner adjustment. I have posted on it several times. The 550 probably has a manual tensioner. See my gallery for pics of manual and automatic tensioners.
