My clutch cable broke the other night while out riding. I replaced the cable and seemed well until I began riding.

When stopped, I can shift into 1st gear just fine. I let the clutch out and start moving, but if I pull the clutch lever back (still in first gear), the engine boggs down and quits. It almost seems as if the clutch plates are becoming stuck.

When I put the bike on the center-stand, i've noticed when it is in first gear with the clutch lever pulled in, the back-wheel turns, but it is very difficult to turn by hand w/ the engine off.

    Any instight?

I'm not surprised that the rear wheel turns while in first with the clutch pulled in, this is not unheard of.
What concerns me is the engine dying when you pull in the clutch and you weren't entirely clear as to whether the bike was in gear or not when you try to turn over the wheel with the engine off. It is possible you have the clutch too tight. Follow the nice step-by-step instructions Rick posted last year (hit the search function, you'll be glad you did). If that doesn't help, you've got problems in the internals. Let us know what happens.

Sorry i wasn't more clear. I can get going in first gear just fine. After I'm rolling along in first gear, and pull in the clutch lever, the engine will die as I slow down unless I give it a good twist of throttle.

The engine overall is a little rough, so I think I will have to try to sync/tune the carbs. The weird the thing is, I didn't have this much trouble until my last clutch cable broke, and the bike doesn't have much trouble running until after I'm rolling and pull the clutch back in.

Look and see if you got the routing of the Clutch Cable passing through to the Lower-end ... messed-up between the Coils or Plug Wires.

Sounds like when you pull the Clutch Lever the Clutch Cable causes something it's entangled with or running too close too -- to Short-out the Ignition!
