I got my 82 550 frame chopped and I am new to welding.

I was told by a guy who welds that the frame was Chrom-molly and I needed chrome-molly to weld to it for the frame and TIG would be necessary.

I am having trouble sourcing that steel here in Des Moines, IA.

Any experienced welders out there give me a little advise?

    Thank you very much!!

Oh, And tig should be used when welding on 4031, but I used my mig when welding it to my frame. I just checked it regularly for the first 3 months. It has yet to show any signs of cracking. I think the reason you should tig chromoly is because it is heat treated? and when to much heat is applied it may get more brittle?

This is all probably way off so defiantly get other opinions on this. I am actually interested on what people here who weld have to say about it.

I use chromoly for all sorts of crap. I get it free from my old job.

I wouldn't recomend using disimilar metals like i did though. Some one on here should be able to tell you exactly what the frame is made of, but I am almost positive it isn't chromoly. I think it is mainly used on Bicycle frames, and airospace applications.

Thank you very much for the information so far sir!

I see a lot of guys building hardtails and just assumed that they bought steel tube and went at it.

I have been around welding but never understood the finer points.......

I weld for a job and I'm also working on my xj750 and I welded the frame together with wire welder and goin to finish it up with my gas wire welder and the 1 inch tubbing I welded on the back because I chopped off the back and make it a hard tail burned in just fine with flux wire welder. My bike is an 82 and its just steel 1inch tubing

    Thank you hardtail!

So I can just use regular steel and a mig welder and not have to worry about tig work on chrome moly.

    That helps a lot!
