Well Crap, Oil Sump problems

    Well, long time lurker, and this is my hello :(

    Was moving the engine today, and due to circumstances they I would rather not discuss :oops: the engine slipped and fell about an inch right onto the oil level sensor. It then proceeded, to my horror, to gush out the last remaining oil pretty much how you would imagine someone cracking their head open. So after some cleanup, we found that the oil sump plate has completely cracked around the sensor.

    So, first issue, any idea if this has just killed my motor entirely? Would the shock have gone through the entire engine breaking and bending everything or should I go ahead and find a replacement sump and fit it back on?

    Two, I will proabbly need a replacement plate, so if anyone has a parts bike (maxim 83, XJ650) and would be so kind to sell it to me i'd be very grateful!

    And third, I tried to remove the plate by removing all 13 allen screws, but the thing won't budge... Is there something else holding it down or have I really fudged things up? :?

    Well I managed to dislodge the sump, everything looks ok *fingers crossed* so now it's really just an issue of getting a new one I suppose. If anyone is willing to part with a spare one give me a shout please!

    Since that Sump has has 25-years to bake-on, real good ... it's going to need some help getting started.

    Lacquer Thinner will soften-up the bond. But, you don't want to scratch-up the surfaces.

    I get the Cover "Started-off" by gently forcing (and tapping lightly) on a Box Cutter Type Utility Knife and splitting the seam.

    You need eye-gear, gloves, a rubber mallet, needle nose pliers, vice grips, a Phillips Screwdriver and the Construction site package of refill blades.

    Here's a line on a replacement cover:

    NorthEast Cycle Salvage
    Tewksbury, Massachusetts
    A Division of Drum Hill Cycles
    Chelmsford, Massachusetts

    (Save the Dowel Pins. Your likely to need them no matter where you find a replacement part.

    That's a tough one for you.
    Sorry you smashed that part.

    Yea it wasn't fun getting it off, pins are there and all good tho. Thanks for the lead, I'll give them a shout and see if they can save my ass. :oops:

    What did you do ... run-out to the Phone Booth and change?

    I found a place nearby http://www.motorcycle-parts.ca/index.html that I'm gonna swing by tomorrow, but if you're willing to give them a call to see how much it would cost me I would be in your debt! Don't jump into a car (or bike) and drive over there for me tho, unless you've got something else you need to pick up!

    I'm going to see if they have a bucket of Shims and see if there's enough in the various sizes to start a Shim Pool.

    Before putting the oil pan back on make sure you check the oil pump screen well. It is the lowest part or the part closest to the pan so most susceptable to damage. If there is any gunk on the screen clean that off and as long as the wire screen looks OK then you probably are good to go!
