The service manual for my son’s Yamaha Grizzly 80 4 wheeler says to level the carb by jacking up the front end, attach the clear tube, start the engine, and then take the reading with the engine running. Ever heard of that?

Do they give an angle or height to jack the front up to? Seems sort of imprecise.

Yep. Page 87 of the XJ1100 download manual states the same.
I think the FJ's and the XJR's use the same method. I've never used that method so can't really comment. On my XS/XJ1100 bitsa I just use the standard float height method.

Think about what we do when we wet set on the bench after a rebuild. Same, same.

I assume you jack it up until the carb is level. Anyway, I leveled it when I wet set the float—not on the bike so not the running method.
