I'm planning on bringing the gauge cluster in the house with me, when I put her to sleep.

Going to separate the glass from the housing and redo the cluster framing paint, fix the speedo needle, get some nice broght paint for the needles. Just a general overhaul, i'll have months to do it so it should be pretty painless :)

Hard part will be heating up the glue on the glass to get it out.

What are you guys planning on doing to your rides over the winter?

Complete front end...brakes, MC, lines, calipers....progressive springs...fork seals...bearings. Perhaps if still motivated I'll reread Fitz's tutorial on the gauge cluster rebuild and tackle that...perhaps.

Of course the normal maintenance stuff...change fluids and check/adjust valve clearances.

Long overdue valve clearances! Plus a caliper rebuild, at a minimum...

Since I just spent 3 months on the Xj650 from the Frame up not much more I can do. Finish the seat pan, cover it and mount it. Change the Tank the sporty is too small for this bike. Rear short sissy bar and relocate rear brake light and turn signals. Maybe some forward controls. Then start on the 70 Cb450 Honda chopper if I don't then I'll end up tearing the XJ down again and doing what Ideas I had too late to do at this moment..And of course always working on the 72 FLH.

As I've been collecting all the parts through the summer, plates, springs, gasket. I think it may be time to replace the clutch.

that and a good service! But still making the most of the dry days at the moment..

Oil change, progressive springs, valve check, and ride anytime the road isn't white.

Was going to do nothing but now that you mentioned it, I'll rebuild my seat with more firm foam.
I have a friend who owns an Upholstery shop and I can go in and do it. It's way to soft.
Would like to redo the gold YAMAHA on the gas tank but don't know how to take them off.

I'm not sure which way it is on the 750 Max, but it will either be 2 screws or tape.

    2 screws = screwdriver

Tape (or glue) = heat with a hair dryer and slowly and methodically work a very sharp blade between the tank and badge.

Also forgot, I'm reupholstering the seat. Seat and fork springs are the only thing I didn't do last winter.

Speaking of winter, it's cold enough to start thinking about thermal underwear for the morning work commute.

Are the screws inside the tank?

That requires breaking some fused plastic ring - save the pieces.
I'm going to make some kind of "press" when I glue mine back together, as the rubber gasket needs to be compressed uniformly while the glue sets ( I think) so that it will be water-tight again.

Think I should recover them with the gold with them on the bike.

Pretty well a complete tear down and rebuild. (Ok okay, I may pay attention to tear down and rebuild) while I wet sand by hand all the aluminum with 600, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit then Autosol. High heat paint the fins and change the dry rubber parts.

First of all ....what is Autosol? Well like some others i am facing a complete rebuild starting with valve adjustment. Then tackle the carbs again( doing it right this time). Then check rear brakes for delamination and grease rear end. Then send off seat to get recovered per Big Fitz. Then go thru side cases and engine detail and all controls triple clamps and controls. Also check/replace steering head bearings as needed and possibly add Progressive springs. Then pop the dent on the gas tank and stripe and paint all the body parts. As if that is not enuf i also have a BMW K100 tranny to rebuild. Then come spring take it to the MO Highway Patrol and try to get a title, ( bought it without a title 2 years ago). Sounds like i wont have much down time this winter. LOL !

I'm looking at upgrading to stainless lines. Have the parts, but don't want to put her away for the winter quite yet. Also, gonna do a complete fork rebuild including progressive springs. Maybe rebuild the brake calipers too.... Other than that, just tinkering and tuning. Always something to do!

    Hey All,

Over the weekend I replaced Clutch and Shifter gaskets and grommets (Shout Out and Plug to Len and XJ4ever!). I also re-worked head gasket cover. This winter I intend to replace my head gasket and try to stop this oil leak. The last time I removed my head I used the same gasket with Indian Head. It slowed the leak but at high rpms it still leaks.

    Gary
