I have a stock 82 XJ750 maxim imported into the UK with 20k on sitting not turned a wheel for a couple of years now. Having re-visited this wonderful site I have been invigorated into getting this back in shape for the summer.

I have started to strip this down to the frame for re-painting (still in pretty good nick but could be better) but I am looking for some suggestions from those who know best to help me get focussed on getting this looking great !! I know it's all personal taste but all input very welcome !!

Areas I really don't like - Square headlamp & aux lamp, bars, instrument cluster, indicator lamps. Basically all the square stuff !!!

    Cheers

I just bought the exact same bike, my old man is picking it up today. Post some pics of what you come up with and I'll do the same. I've already got some bars for it and the round headlights you can get on Ebay pretty cheap.

No problem - will do. I should have taken some pics before I started stripping it - DOH !! , but I'll take some tonight.

What bits did you pick up?? just out of interest - what are you thoughts on changes you want to make?

I guess it all depends on what your meaning of "cool" is. Some like the sport bike look/seating position. Some like to make alot of changes in the frame, controls and instrument cluster (clusterf---) so your asking a mouthful. I always liked the bobbed/chopper type bikes (more like a cruiser instead of a performance oriented bike, so my ideas are bias.
What kind of bike would you like to end up with? Do you want to keep it mostly stock and just add accessories galore to dress it up? Or do you want to strip it down to the bare bones and make it simple?
I went with solid struts, thinking it would be the best/simplest way to lower the back. ...wrong! I could only ride it on very smooth roads or limit my ride to a very, very short one (not going to happen) I had to avoid any kind of bump or pay dearly with a sore back/butt. I decided to go back to shocks instead and just cut them shorter (much better for me)
There are no limits on what can be done to any bike. It all depends on your wallet or if your good at fabrication.

Yeah - understand it is all personal taste. I think I will stick to keeping it more or less stock frame wise. Already stripped to the bones and ready for powder coating. Engine is out on the bench, clocks etc removed and now just taking stock to work out the plan of attack...

Would you recommend doing a "top end" overhaul on the engine whilst the unit is out? even although it was running OK? and what other areas of the XJ Maxim should I look at whilst I have it stripped to this level?

The obvious ones I will do are - the head bearings to tapered, swinging arm bearings but anything else?

    Cheers
