Well I have just followed the guide and cleaned my carbs . I have installed new seals all round set float heights and mixture screws are 2.5 turns out .

But when my bike runs it smokes quite black smoke and smells richand is lumpy . The mixture screw is on the lean side and I just checked the fuel heights wet and they read 4mm below the line which is also on the lean side. I have blown down the fuel line with fuel in the bowls and they dont flood.

Any ideas or past experience that you guys might think I have missed .

Can you narrow it down to a specific carb? try cleaning the plugs good then doing a plug chop.
Are your carbs seated well into the runners and airbox?

Is your "Choke" open or closed while it does this? And if closed does it close all the way?

The choke on these bikes is actually an enrichment cirbuit adding fuel to the mix rather than reducing air.

And which specific bike are we working on? Add it to your signature so we can help better.

Look VERY CAREFULLY at ALL the Enrichment Plungers.

    They need to CLOSE.
When Slacked, ... there should be some FREE PLAY where the Top Hats of the Plungers sits between the "Lifting Fingers"

    1) Make sure you have assembled the "Chokes" right, ... and the Lifting Fork Fasteners are seated in the Detents on the Long Rod.

    2) "TUNE" the Enrichment Plunger Lifting Forks.
:::: They get "Bent outta shape" when a Bike fails to start and the operator gets angry, ::::

    3) SYNC the Plunger Lifters.
:::: Hold a Socket or a Teaspoon under each separate set of forks. The "CURVE" needs to be the same on each one. ::::

sorry its a 750 seca with the HSC32 carbs.
choke works well when cold and seems to shut off completely . I cant seem to narrow it to one specific carb , when i got the bike the plugs were black as hell so I have installed new plugs and done a plug chop and they seems a good light brown colour . yet it still smokes and smells rich .
I haven't got the air box on at the minute as i am taking the carbs on and off so often to try and sort the running out .
so in theory , low fuel height , no air box and 4-1 it should be really lean

Did you have the airbox on during your test because that will affect your results - oops - just re-read your last post. Yes, should be really lean with those parameters.

It IS possible to inadvertently install the airjets under the diaphragm backwards, as they are the same OD but the ID is different. I'd double-check those.
Next, the 2.5 turns is basic. From there, you may need to turn in or out depending, so you may need to do some colortuning.
Next, are you sure that you have the 0-ring and the washer and the spring installed correctly on the mixture screws?

Now, after that has all been said, here's the big question--

DID YOU CHECK AND ADJUST VALVE SHIM CLEARANCES FIRST!?!?!?!!
