What do you use for planning a shunpiking trip?

Gonna take the bike up north and want to plan out a trip that will avoid freeways, but need to locate a gas stop every 100 miles or so.

How do you guys (gals) map out a route - any trick shit software out there that easily allows setting intervals?

Garmin sells a motorcycle GPS with a "twisty roads" option. I'm poor, so I use Google maps with the "avoid freeways" option and look for stations along the way. Or I push the route to my phone and use Google Now's "gas stations along your route".

Yes, I got the term from a rather famous Canadian motorcyclist/ drummer. It's a nice way to travel when you have extra time, only problem I noted is sometimes the roads are so smooth. o_O

Johnius, I'm cheap also. I was doing the Google map thing when I thought of asking the question here.

Well, I just review Google maps in a large enough frame to contain both my origin and destination, then zoom in looking for roads between the two which are not highway/interstate. I make note of them, including when the road changes name or designation plus turns and which towns it passes through. Best part is, if I miss something I never have to backtrack because I can just pull up the map and find an alternate off of my new path. Same way I did when I used folded maps.
As for finding gas stations, I just play it loose on the road based upon how far I can reliably go between fill ups. Generally if I am at 80% or so of my range and I pass a station on an unfamiliar route, I stop. Makes it more interesting.

Given that you probably know from where the term shunpiking originates, I suggest doing what that guy does. Carry an extra gallon of fuel with you (and maybe have a guy with an "extra" bike come along for the ride).

Yeah, I realized that about a second after I hit "Post Reply". Then my shitty phone decided it had done enough, and wouldn't allow me to edit. Now I have to live with my shame.

Truth be told, I don't really listen to Rush. Don't even have one record. Can't get past Geddy's voice. I'm the same way with Zeppelin and Plant. I just can't do it. Which means I miss out on two of the greatest drummers ever and some really excellent guitar and bass to boot. Stupid me. Revoke my citizenship.

Well, I don't own a smart phone so any apps are out of the question.

Big shank's idea sounds pretty straight forward especially after using Google and Bing maps / avoid highways and found it still took me through 'big' cities. So then I try the 'click and drag' feature to change the route and ended up with something that looks like a spiderweb. I do have a Gazateer that would be easy to plot out the tiniest towns and roads possible.

Kmoe, your idea is great. But the plan is to be a one way trip and then leave the bike up at the farm. Wife (riding partner) is going to follow me up in the F150 until Green Bay Area where we will stop to pickup a load of cream city brick to build a hearth for a wood burner that we are getting. After that she goes the quick way and I take the long way.

You eat back bacon and maple syrup right?
Can you quote John Candy, Eugene Levy, Katherine O'Hara or any of the other SCTV actors?
Do you listen to Anvil? (Robb Reiner can hit those skins pretty good).
Do you watch hockey? Do you own a hockey stick and a set of pads?

Answer yes to any o those and you are still Canadian.

I thought you were spoofin' - funny thing, yesterday afternoon I had some issue logging in from my desktop.

whisper voice : i don't watch hockey anymore. The last strike killed it for me. A bunch of egotistical millionaires arguing with some billionaires about how to split up my money, and when they can't agree, they hold ME hostage. Now I'M on strike!!
