    Hi all
    Just Wondering What Type Of Fuel You Use
    Can I use unleaded or do i have to use an additive to substitute the lead that was in the fuel when these bikes where manufactured have just finished doing up my 650 and just need a little info
    by the way i live in Australia

    On 2 wheels... just lost my hat.
    mine loves sipping only the finest 91/92 octane. anything less and it becomes very unhappy.
    I wouldnt think that your bike would still require leaded fuel in 80.
    maybe one of the others could chime in and verify.

    I don't know about bikes in Australia, but Yamaha XJ bikes in the US burn unleaded fuel. I use regular in all of mine, I tried premium but could not tell a difference.

    True. Generic octane numbers are used differently around the world. North America uses Pump Octane Number and the rest of the world uses Research Octane Number.

    The XJs call for 91 Research Octane. Outside North America that's the octane to use.

    In North America 86 or 87 Pump Octane is the equivalent.

    Lead additives shouldn't be necessary anywhere.

    The sticker inside the side cover on my '81 model year (12/80 manuf) 550 Seca says it runs on leaded fuel.

    That being said, I run premium, either BP/Amoco or Mobil, and use no additives.
